12 years ago George Nasser, Managing Director of Opticare, foresaw a changing market for Australia’s optometrists. George observed that increasing numbers of optometrists were joining franchise groups and as a result, the remaining independent optometrists were losing their competitive edge. George is an independent optometrist himself. He knew the benefits of being independent – both for his own business and his customers – and he wanted to stay that way. And so the concept for Optipro Australia was born – a buying and marketing group to give independents all the power of a franchise, while retaining their autonomy.
Over time, as the industry became more fragmented and franchises began to dominate large shopping centres, the need for Optipro became more apparent. In response to growing demand, George set about bringing his concept to fruition. He commenced negotiations with prospective suppliers and began working to develop a constitution. In 2009 Optipro Australia was created.
Optipro Australia currently has relationships with 14 leading suppliers of contact lenses, lenses and frames, including high fashion brands. As the strength of the group grows and orders increase, further brands will be added to the supplier list.
While optical independent professionals are eligible to purchase 3000 shares upon joining the Optipro group, these shares are fully redeemable should the member wish to leave the group. Furthermore, all shareholders receive an annual dividend based on 50% of the group’s net profits.
